I'm not going to sell you the Riviera as a Christmas-market destination. The markets here are smaller than the ones in Alsace or Germany, and some of the chalets sell exactly what you'd expect. What's different is the setting, mulled wine under palm trees with a harbour full of yachts behind the chalets, and how close everything is. Nice, Monaco and Menton each run a Christmas village, and Italy starts just past the last of them.
Nice: the Christmas village at the Jardin Albert 1er
Nice's village sits between the Jardin Albert 1er and Place Masséna: more than sixty chalets, as much food and drink as crafts (vin chaud, oysters, socca) and free to enter. The Nice Côte d'Azur tourist office lists the 2026–27 edition from 27 November 2026 to 3 January 2027. Last year's ran from 28 November to 4 January, and on 31 December it closed early, at 19:00.
Nice has had a new municipal team since 2026, so I'd still check nice.fr a few days before for the final hours and programme. Go after dark: the illuminations are half the point, and Place Masséna is at its best lit.
Monaco: the village on Port Hercule
Monaco's village is run by the Mairie on the Quai Albert 1er at Port Hercule, the stretch that holds the Grand Prix grandstands in May. Last year it ran from 5 December 2025 to 4 January 2026, opening daily from 11:00. The 2026 programme isn't out yet; the Mairie's page says it's coming. On 31 December the village becomes the venue for Monaco's free New Year's Eve party, fireworks included. If you're there that night, read New Year's Eve in Monaco and Nice before you plan the way home.
Done together, Nice and Monaco make one evening: Monaco first while there's still light on the harbour, Nice after dark. Monaco is where a car matters least during the day and most at night, because there is no Uber in the Principality and the last train back to Nice leaves before midnight.
Menton: the one people skip
Noël à Menton ran from 5 December 2025 to 4 January 2026 on a "Christmas in the mountains" theme: a market of 35 chalets on the Mail du Bastion and the Esplanade Francis-Palmero by the sea, rides and food stands in the Jardins Biovès, and an ice rink on the parvis Jean Cocteau. The market kept longer hours at the weekend: 10:00 to 19:00 from Sunday to Thursday, until 22:00 on Friday and Saturday. The 2026 programme will be published on the same site.
It's the one I'd pair with Italy, because it's the last town before the border.
The day that crosses the border
Christmas on the Italian side, the Riviera dei Fiori, isn't one big market. It's spread across small towns, and much of it happens on specific days. That's why it works better as a day with a plan than as a wander.
Ventimiglia: the Friday market
Every Friday from 07:00, Ventimiglia's seafront fills with what the town calls the largest market in Italy: clothing, leather, household goods, food, and stallholders who mostly speak French. It isn't a Christmas market, but in December it's where plenty of people on this coast do their Christmas shopping. The town doesn't publish what happens when a Friday falls on a public holiday, and this year that matters: 25 December 2026 and 1 January 2027 are both Fridays.
Dolceacqua: nativity scenes in the shop windows
Up the Nervia valley, Dolceacqua, the village with the single-arch bridge Monet painted, ran a month of Christmas events last year, from 30 November 2025 to 6 January 2026: nativity scenes in shop windows across the village for its Presepiando competition, a traditional market in Piazza Mauro on the weekend of 13–14 December, and a torchlit procession on 26 December. It's small, which is the point. The summer version of this corner of Italy is in my Italian Riviera day trip.
Bordighera and Sanremo
Bordighera held its Christmas market in the old town, the paese alto, on 5–7 December last year. Sanremo's programme changes from one year to the next, but one fixture recurs: an ice rink in Piazza Colombo, which ran from 1 December to 6 January in 2024–25. Sanremo is the natural place to finish the Italian part of the day, after dark.
A Friday in DecemberBefore you cross
Italian holidays move the day
8 December, 25 and 26 December, 1 January and 6 January are public holidays in Italy. The 8th tends to bring markets out; the 25th and 26th close most shops. With both 25 December and 1 January on a Friday this year, the Friday plan needs a different week. Carry a passport or ID card: the border is open, but checks do happen.
How I'd put a Christmas week together
- Fix the Italian day first. It's the only one tied to a day of the week, so pick your Friday and build around it.
- Do Nice and Monaco in one evening. Monaco in the last of the light, Nice once the illuminations are on.
- Keep Menton for the way back from Italy. It's on the road home, and its market stays open late on Fridays.
- Book 24 and 25 December early. Restaurants fill, and in Italy most shops close on the 25th and 26th.
- Staying for New Year's Eve? Read the New Year's Eve guide now, not on the 30th.
Questions I get about Christmas on the Riviera
When is the Christmas market in Nice in 2026?
The Nice Côte d'Azur tourist office lists the 2026–27 Christmas village from 27 November 2026 to 3 January 2027, at the Jardin Albert 1er and Place Masséna, free to enter. Last year's ran from 28 November 2025 to 4 January 2026. Check nice.fr for the final programme.
When is the Monaco Christmas village?
It runs every December on the Quai Albert 1er at Port Hercule. Last year it ran from 5 December 2025 to 4 January 2026, opening daily from 11:00. The 2026 dates are published on mairie.mc.
Is there a Christmas market in Menton?
Yes. Noël à Menton ran from 5 December 2025 to 4 January 2026, with 35 chalets on the Mail du Bastion and the Esplanade Francis-Palmero, rides in the Jardins Biovès and an ice rink on the parvis Jean Cocteau. The 2026 programme is published on noel-menton.fr.
Are there Christmas markets on the Italian Riviera near Nice?
Yes, but they're smaller and spread across towns and dates. Last year Bordighera held its market in the old town on 5–7 December and Dolceacqua on 13–14 December, and Sanremo runs an ice rink in Piazza Colombo through the holidays. Ventimiglia's Friday market runs all year.
Can you visit Italy from Nice for the day at Christmas?
Yes. Ventimiglia is the first Italian town past Menton, and Dolceacqua and Sanremo are both close from there. Carry a passport or ID card, and check Italian public holidays (8, 25 and 26 December, 1 and 6 January) before you pick the day.
Planning a December stay?
Tell me your dates and I'll tell you which Friday works for Italy, which evening to do Nice and Monaco, and what's actually open that week. The rest of the season, from a ski day to the February carnivals, is in Winter on the French Riviera.
